Thesis/Claim Statement

A one sentence statement that tells the reader what the writing will be about.

It is developed, supported, and explained in the text using examples and evidence used to answer all questions and in most writings.  Narratives do not have thesis/claim statements

Examples:

In many cities across America, children go without dinner.

In the novel Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone by JK Rowling, Harry Potter learns a lot about magic and himself.

Evidence

Quotes or paraphrased truths that prove to or persuade the reader of the validity of an argument.

Examples:

THESIS: In many cities across America, children go without dinner.

“Thirty-five percent of children ages five to eighteen have little or no food available to them after school” (36).

It is a little known fact that “thirty-five percent” of school age children “have little or no” dinner every night (36).

Many school children go to bed hungry because there is no food in the house (36).

Analysis (Response)

Evaluation or interpretation of the author’s writing. It often attempts to connect to the main point or has a larger world application.

Examples:

In many cities across America, children go without dinner.  “Thirty-five percent of children ages five to eighteen have little or no food available to them after school” (36).

These children are often malnourished, tired, and often perform poorly in school
